Born and raised in London, England, Welch attended Thomas's London Day School and later, Alleyn's School in South East London. She went on to study at the University of the Arts London's Camberwell College of Arts before dropping out to pursue a career in music. 


Florence Welch is most known as a founding member and the lead vocalist and principal songwriter of the English indie rock band Florence and the Machine (Florence + the Machine).

Welch started performing solo under the stage name Florence Robot Was a Machine. She formed the band Florence and the Machine in 2007 with her friend and collaborator Isabella Summers on keyboards, Rob Ackroyd on the guitar, and Tom Monger on the harp. Throughout the years, the band has expanded musically to include a litany of musicians on various instruments.

Florence and the Machine released their debut studio album, Lungs, in July 2009, and eventually peaked at #1 in the UK Album Charts. The album has since sold over 3 million copies worldwide and has been certified Platinum twice by the RIAA.
