Fionnuala Sweeney was born in 1965 in Belfast of Northern Ireland. Her family raised her with great compa s sion and care. Her family moved to Dublin when Sweeney was only 12 years old. After that, Dublin became her new home.
Career and path
Fionnuala Sweeney joined University College Dublin to initially receive education and graduated from there with a bachelor’s degree in English and History and a Higher Diploma in Education.
Her career in broadcasting took off in the year 1986 as a newscaster on Chris Cary’s Energy Power 103 FM. Cary’s station talked about energy power issues and concerns. Besides that, she also co-presented a show “Wake up With Energy” with famous anchors like Pat Courtney and Bob Gallico. She was known by the on-air name of Lisa Moore while she worked for the station. Fionnuala Sweeney left the station in 1988 after working there for almost about 2 years. She joined another radio station RTE 2FM after that. She also worked as a newscaster there.
Due to her excellent performance, Fionnuala Sweeney got a chance to initiate her TV career as a TV reporter. While working for RTE 2FM, she received an opportunity to work as a TV reporter and news anchor. She hosted the 38th 1993 Eurovision Song Contest. It was one of her major a s signments for which she got selected in the year 1993. The broadcast was live and was viewed by more than 300 million people. It was broadcasted in three different languages.
Fionnuala Sweeney left RTE 2FM after working there for six years in the year 1994. After that, she joined the CNN international Headquarters in Atlanta. She worked as a part-time anchor and a producer, there. Due to her good performance in CNN, she was promoted as a full-time anchor. She relocated herself to London after being appointed as a full-time anchor.
She covered news from the Middle East, Europe, and Africa working on varieties of difficult a s signments. She covered the story of the fall of the then Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in the year 2011 which also was a major a s signment of her career. She has also covered critical stories as Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
In 2006, Fionnuala Sweeney made headlines again anchoring and reporting on the Israel- Hezbollah Conflict from Haifa. Her coverage won the network an Edward R. Murrow award.
