The 28-year old Derrick Martell Rose is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association. He became the leader of the Chicago Bulls after being drafted 1st in the year of 2008. He was traded to the New York Knicks in 2016. As a high school student, Rose also listed as No. 1 all over the nation.

Early Life and Education

Derrick Martell Rose was born on October 4, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the youngest son of the Brenda Rose after Allan, Reggie, and Dwayne. Regarding his nationality and ethnicity, Derrick is a white American. Raised without a father in the tough Englewood, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side.

Being the youngest of three talented basketball player brothers, his brothers taught him all that he wanted to know about basketball as well as he received fatherly affection. 

"My mom would walk down the street and drag us home if she heard we were getting into trouble," Rose later told Sports Illustrated. "Even the drug dealers, when they saw her coming, would stop dealing and tell her where we were."

High School Career

By the time, Derrick attended Simone Career Academy in the year 2003 and became the hot commodity for collegiate coaches. Despite his fame, he played JV basketball and freshmen for the Wolverines. During his high school career, he won a number of awards.

Derrick was listed in the nation's best high school point guard, averaged 25.2 points and guided Simeon to a 33-2 record during his high school season. Following his senior year, he was named by the Chicago Tribune as 2007 "Illinois Mr. Basketball Player."

Moreover, Martell was named to the McDonald’s All-American team.

College Career

Not surprisingly, the college coaches were very happy with the decision of the University of Memphis Tigers landing Derrick Rose to the roster. During his high school, he quickly became famous and he single handed led the Memphis to 38 total wins—the most in NCAA history—and the 2008 national championship game, where the team lost to the Kansas Jayhawks in overtime.

Derrick finished as a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award and the John R. Wooden Award. On April 15, it announced that Rose would decline his final three seasons at Memphis and declared for the 2008 NBA draft.

However, Derrick’s time at Memphis wasn’t good enough. At that time he faced a number of obstacles. In 2009, due to NCAA rules violations, the NCAA ordered the school to vacate its 2007-08 season and serve three years' probation.

The NCC report didn’t exactly name Rose as one of the contenders but he was the only player who fits the description of its findings. The report remarked that Rose had elected someone else to take his SAT in order to meet academic eligibility requirements.

Further, Memphis was also accused by investigators of paying $1,700 in free travel to Rose's brother, Reggie. Chicago Bulls selected Derrick in the 2008 draft.

NBA Career

He averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 a s sists per game and earning Rookie of the Year honors as well as leading the Bulls back to the playoffs during his NBA season (2009-09).

During his second season, due to his ankle injury, he had to miss the pre-season games. Following his recovery, he played well and led his team to several victories. Chicago Bulls also made the playoffs in the 2009-10 seasons, and finally finished with a 41-41 record.

At the time, he became a part of the US National basketball team. The team also won a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Cup. During his next season, he was named the ‘NBA Most Valuable Player.’, which was a historic achievement for him, joining Michel Jordon as the only players to receive the award in Chicago Bulls history.

At this time, Derrick was only 22-year-old and was awarded as the youngest player to receive the award in the history of the NBA. Over the few seasons, he performed well and he soon gained a huge popularity as an all-around basketball player in the NBA.

In 2014, he was again nominated as a member of the US National team, which won a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Derrick and Justin Holiday were traded to the New York Knicks in June 2016. He signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, on July 25, 2017.

The popular American basketball player, Derrick Martell Rose is an unmarried. However, Derrick is currently dating Alana Anderson and they display their love in the social media as they often post many PDA pictures of themselves.

Derrick was previously dating Mieke Reese and they have also a child together. However, Reese broke up with Derrick because of his alleged relationship with a stripper. Currently, the couple is in very good term with each other even after their breakup.

Apart from his love affairs, Derrick has also been a lot of controversies and allegations. A woman named Jane Doe accused him along with two other men of raping her on August 27, 2013.

Following the incident, Doe pleaded for 21.5 million dollars as the compensation for damages. However, Derrick was declared innocent by the jury of six women, who instead claimed Doe to be a sexually adventurous gold-digger.

Derrick Rose currently has a net worth of $85 million. He grossed his 70 million dollar fortune playing with Chicago Bulls from 2008-2016. Derrick also earned a tremendous amount of money through his several sponsorships and endorsing well-known brands including Adidas.

Moreover, Derrick has a contract with Adidas for 13 years, he still makes over $10 million per year from the contract. Derrick also played the final year of his five-year for $94 million for New York Knicks, but he is now in a new contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. As of 2017, Derrick receives $21.32 million of annual salary. He is 6 feet 3 inches tall.
