Derek's father used to be a part of a rock band called "The Cars." In the 1970s Ocasek and Orr moved to Boston after being, in bands in Columbus and Ann Arbor, Michigan. They formed a folk rock band named Milkwood, which had a style similar to Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Their album "How The Weather" was released on Paramount Records in 1973. Unfortunately didn't achieve much success on the charts.

Milkwood's record also featured Greg Hawkes, who was the keyboardist for Future Cars. After Milkwood Richard Ocasek created a band called Richard and the Rabbits with Orr and Hawkes. On Ocasek and Orr teamed up with guitarist Elliot Easton to establish Cap'n Swing.

Cap'n Swing caught the attention of WBCN disc jockey Maxanne Sartori when she played their demo tape on her program. Ocasek then made some changes to the band by replacing the bassist and drummer with members who better suited his songwriting style.

David Robinson, known for his work, with the Modern Lovers became their drummer while Orr switched to playing bass. In 1976 Hawkes returned as their keyboardist. Eventually, they decided to rename themselves "the Cars."
