Everything turned when he crossed paths with Cindy Clerico, an 18-year-old stand-in for Melissa Francis, who played Cassandra Cooper Ingalls. Karen Grassle, Landon's on-screen wife, described Clerico as a "nice young woman" in her 2021 memoir.

Grassle noted that after Landon met Clerico, his behavior underwent a shift. He began discussing a "revived libido" and glorifying the benefits of "bee pollen for the aging male." Eventually, the cast realized Landon's weird comments were linked to an affair with Clerico.

Grassle revealed that their connection deepened when Clerico loaned Landon a copy of Nancy Friday's "My Mother, My Self," he engaged in longer conversations with her than anyone else on set.
