Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, a Danish actress, was born on 16 January 1982. She is notable for her roles in several movies and television series like Automata (as Rachel Vaucan), Pitch Perfect 2 (as Minna Vilfort) and Borgen (as Katrine Fønsmark). She has also appeared in one of the episodes of ‘Game of Thrones’. She is also known for her portrayal of Roxie Hart in the musical ‘Chicago’ in Copenhagen and London.  

Early Life

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was born as the third daughter to her parents, who were both doctors. Her motivation to become an actress was the West End production of the musical ‘Chicago’, which she had watched on a school trip to London. With the mindset of being an actress in the future, Sørensen got enrolled at the Danish National School of Theatre.

Career

In 2005, while still attending the Danish National School of Theatre, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen made her acting debut by playing the role of a receptionist on the television series ‘The Eagle’. This was followed by playing the lead role of Roxie Hart in the 2007 production of the musical ‘Chicago’ at the Det Nyi Theater in Copenhagen.

The next year, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen reprised the role in the West End production at the Cambridge Theatre in London. In the same year, she also appeared in ‘The Candidate’ as Sarah. In 2009, she appeared in the Danish action comedy film ‘Ved verdens ende’ (At World's End) as Beate.

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen made a breakthrough in her acting career in 2010, when she got the role of an idealistic journalist Katrine Fønsmark, in the DR political drama Borgen. The role of a strong female protagonist earned Sørensen international recognition, especially in the United Kingdom. In the next few years, she appeared in ‘Truth about men’, ‘Magi I luften (Love is in the Air)’ and ‘Balladen om Marie Krøyer (The Pa s sion of Marie)’. She got nominations for the Robert Award for Best Actress for her roles in Ved verdens ende and At World’s End.

In 2013, Sørensen appeared in singular episodes of Bluestone 42 as Astrid and Agatha Christie's Marple as Greta. The next year, she appeared in the episode ‘The Killings of Copenhagen’ in Midsomer Murders as well as in ‘Automata’ as Rachel Vaucan and ‘In Order of Disappearance’ as Marit. In 2015, she appeared in the episode called ‘Hardhome’ of the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ as Karsi, a wildling chieftain. She also appeared in the musical comedy sequel Pitch Perfect 2 as Kommissar, the leader of a rival German a cappella group.
