Two-times Oscar nominees American film editor Barry Malkin, whose film editing on The Cotton Club and The Godfather: Part III won him the nominees, died at the age of 80 on Thursday, 4th April 2019.

Malkin had worked for over 30 movies in his lifetime and best known for working as a longtime collaborator with Francis Ford Coppola with whom he had teamed with on eleven feature films.

After graduating from Adelphi University, Barry started his professional career in 1964 as an apprentice to Dede Allen in the movie America America directed by Elia Kazan. He met editor Aram Avakian in the set and went on to become his a s sistant editor on 1964’s Lilith. He then first got a credit of an editor on television’s The Patty Duke Show.

His connection with Avakian came through The Coppola eventually leading director to hire him to editor his The Rain People.

Barry has worked for several movies like Godfather Trilogy, Cotton Comes to Harlem, Cops and Robbers, The Fat Spy, Apocalypse Now, Hammett, and many others. The Big Bounce was the last movie he had worked for.

Malkin earned a BAFTA nomination for best movie editing for The Godfather: Part II, and later won his Oscars nominee for the third movie in the trilogy.
