Alexander Frei was born in Basel, Switzerland, on 15 July 1979. He has a sister named Andrea Frei who plays football for the Basel ladies team. He opened the doors for his footballing career joining the youth set-up FC Begnins at the tender age of 8 and played for a year.

Alexander Frei began his professional football career playing for his hometown club FC Basel. He later played for the French club Rennes and quickly showed his potential and gained a lot of popularity becoming the highest goalscorer during the 2004-5 season in Ligue 1.
