Melissa Marie Mathison was a screenwriter for television and film and of American nationality. She was also an activist for Tibetan freedom and was born on the 3rd of June, 1950. She was born to parents Richard Randolph Mathison and Margaret Jean. She was actively involved in the screenwriting fraternity from 1979 to 2015, up until her death. She died on the 4th of November, 2015 and will be remembered for the contributions she has done to the film industry.

Melissa was born in Los Angeles, California and was enrolled in the University of California when she was young. She started her career after attaining the attention of Steven Spielberg after writing the script for The Black Stallion. She is known for being the writer of the screenplay for E.T the Extra-Terrestrial with Steven Spielberg. This screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of best original screenplay. She collaborated with him, also on writing the screenplay for The BFG. She knew the Dalai Lama since 1990 and she wrote the script for Kundun. Her friendship with him grew even more and she was also an activist for the Tibetan Freedom.
