American businessman and politician, Gavin Christopher Newsom is serving as the 49th and current Lieutenant Governor of California. He was elected in 2010.

Before, he served as Mayor of San Francisco from 2004-2011. He is the Democratic candidate in the 2018 gubernatorial election, after having placed first in the primary on June 5, 2018. 

He has been married to actress, Jennifer Siebel since 2008. The couple shares four children; Montana Tessa Newsom, Hunter Siebel Newsom, Brooklyn, and Dutch. He was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle in 2001.

Early Life And Education Gavin Newsom

Gavin was born on October, 10 in San Francisco in 1967. This politician was born to Tessa Thomas and William Alfred Newsom III. He is a fourth generation San Franciscan and his father is of Irish Descent. His parents separated when he was 2 but got divorced in 1972.

He moved to nearby Martin County with his mother and sister but his mother died in May 2002 after fighting for 5 years with breast cancer.

Newsom had a very difficult childhood dealing with dyslexia which still affects him. The Governor of California is a graduate of Redwood High School in 1985 and Santa Clara University in political science in 1989.

He was interested in baseball and basketball and was on the cover of the Marin Independent Journal for his baseball skills. His childhood friend, Derek Smith considered him as one of the hard-working players on the team. His father was a friend of Jerry Brown.

Gavin's mother, Tessa, worked three jobs to support the family and Newsome also worked for numerous companies in high school to maintain the family needs. He also studied for a semester in Rome. Newsome and his investors created a company, PlumpJack Winery L.P. on May 14, 1991, with the financial help from his family Gordon Getty.

Getty treated Gavin as a family member and invested in their maximum business. His early interaction with the government was when PlumpJack Winery required installing a sink, asked help from the San Francisco Health Department. The business grew wide with 700 employees.

Gavin Newsom's Career

Along with Winery, they also opened PlumpJack Café. Including Café, Newsome and his investors opened numerous other business like PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn (1994), the Balboa Café Bar and Grill, The Napa Valley Winery, PlumpJack Development Fund L.P., PlumpJack Wines shop Noe Valley branch, a second Balboa Café at Squaw Valley, PlumpJackSport retail clothing and many more.

His annual income was more than $429000 in the late 90s to 2001 and in 2002; it was more than $6.9 million. He sold his San Francisco business when he became mayor in 2004. He is the president in absentia of Airelle Winery in Napa Country.

In 2007, he earned more than $141,000. His first step to his political experience was in 1995 when he volunteered for Willie Brown’s Successful campaign for mayor. He was also elected for the president of the commission.

This politician was also the youngest member of San Francisco’s Board of supervisors and also the board’s only heterosexual Caucasian male. Willie Brown called him part of the future generation of the leaders of this great city.

He was elected to a full four-term to the board in 1998. Newsome was re-elected in 2000 and 2002 to represent District 2. His district had the highest Republican registration and highest income level in San Francisco.

Newsom worked as a supervisor in advocating the reform of the city’s Municipal Railway and sponsored Proposition B to develop detailed customer service plans and also a ballot measure from Rescue Mini. He supported HOPE, a failed ballot measure, and house projects.

A voter initiative called Care Not Cash which offered help from behavioral health specialists for homeless, drug treatment, care, and supportive housing. He came first in general election in a nine-man field on November 4, 2003. He also received the endorsement of Willie Brown.

On January 3, 2004, he became mayor. His progress led many people against him like Ross Mirkarimi and Chris Daly but both were declined. He again won the re-election campaign on November 6, 2007. He then focused on the homelessness, education, rebuilding the San Francisco Hospital, health care, and the environment.

As a mayor, he focused on development projects in Treasure Island and Hunters Point. He signed the Health Choices Plan in 2007 and also joined the Kyoto Protocol. He also issued marriage licenses to same-sex marriage and the state law pa s sed in 2000 which attracted the attention of people toward him.

At first, there was a conflict on this subject but later the law was pa s sed. Care Not Cash, it got implemented on July 1, 2004.

Other programs include Project Homeless Connect and the San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team. He joined UNITE HERE union members on a picket line. In 2005, he also pa s sed the policy discriminating against breeds of dogs.

In 2009, Newsom was under attack for the City of San Francisco’s policy of illegally harboring a juvenile criminal. He was separated from the San Francisco County Democratic Central Committee. Newsome has also received the Leadership for Healthy Communities Award. He was called as America’s Most Society Mayor.

In 2010 election, he revealed his intention to run for governor but on October 2009, he was dropped out of the gubernatorial race. He also received the endorsement of former president Bill Clinton. In 2010, He filed the paperwork to run for the lieutenant governor, he was nominated in June and won the election On November 2010. He was sworn in by January.

He became a host for the tv show, The Gavin Newsom Show on Current TV. He published his first book named Citizenville On February 7, 2013, along with working with the Central for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society.

In 2015, he again cla s sified the computer science courses and provided students athletes with additional academic. He was again re-elected as lieutenant governor of California On November 4, 2014.

Gavin Newsom's Personal Life

Moving on to his personal life, Newsome married Kimberly Guilfoyle, a prosecutor and legal commentator for CNN, Court TV and MSNBC and currently a TV personality on Fox News Channel in December 2001 at Saint Ignatius Catholic Church but they both filed for divorce in January 2005.

After some years, it was revealed that he had a romantic relationship with Ruby Rippey-Tourk, the wife of deputy chief. Then again the news was heard that she was involved in a relationship with the campaign manager, Alex Tourk. However, Tourk filed for divorce after some time and at the same time, he was seen as a betrayer of a close friend and partners.

In September 2006, he began dating an actress, Jennifer Siebel and their engagement was announced in December 2007. They married in July 2008  at Stevensville, Montana. Siebel gave birth to their first child, a girl, Montana Tessa Newsome In September 2009.

On June 12, 2011, she gave birth to their second child, a son, Hunter Siebel Newsome and their third child, Daughter Brooklynn on July  3, 2013. The news of their fourth child Dutch was given On February 26, 2016.
