At first, one of Alexey’s close friends said that the cause was likely unsanitary conditions in jail, but later that evening Alexey’s lawyer released a statement claiming that his symptoms were a result of an undefined chemical substance.
The lawyer, Anastasia Vasileyeva, released in a statement posted to Facebook reported that the hospital authorities prevented him from visiting Alexey but has been able to examine him through the window of the ward’s door.
As per the statement, Alexey has swelling on and around his eyes and puss leaking from his right eye. He also has skin rashes over his neck, chest, back, and his elbow. He said:
This is the result of the harmful effect of an unidentified chemical substance. The doctor noted that none of the five other inmates in Navalny's cell had fallen ill and that Navalny has no allergies and has never previously suffered an allergic reaction.
Yaroslav Ashikhmin, who previously treated Alexey in 2017 after he almost lost his eye after pro-Kremlin activist threw disinfectant in his face, is now concerned that the swelling on his eye could pose a threat to his sight and cause new damage.
Well, Alexey is not the one linked with suspected poisoning. Last year, activist Peter Verzilov was also flown to Germany in critical condition for treatment after he suffered almost certainly poisoning.
