Munira Abdulla, a woman from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), suffered a severe brain injury when she was 32 years old. Her car got collided with a bus on her way to pick up her son from school.

Her son, Omar Webair, who was then only four years old, was sitting in the back of the vehicle with her. As his mother cradled him in her arms just a moment before the accident occurred, he was not harmed at all.

Munira’s brother in law drove the car when the accident occurred, and she was left seriously injured. Last year, she regained consciousness while receiving treatment in a German hospital.

Omar has opened up about his mother’s progress after years of treatment in an interview with the UAE-based newspaper The National. He said:

She hugged me to protect me.

Omar furthermore added:

I never gave up on her because I always had a feeling that one day she would wake up.

In the same interview, Omar explained the reason behind sharing his mother’s story is to tell people not to lose hope on their loved ones. He also requested people not to consider them dead when they are in such a state.

There are only a small number of cases of people who have recovered consciousness after being in a coma for several years. It is impossible to speculate the chances of improvement of someone in a state of impaired consciousness.
