Tim Guinee was born Timothy Sanders Guinee on November 18, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, but grew up in Illinois and Texas, US. He is one of five children to his parents. He has two brothers and two sisters.

He completed his schooling from Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He then enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He is a University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem graduate.
