Taiwan Becomes First Asian Nation To Legalize Gay Marriage

Taiwan becomes the first Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage after its parliament pa s sed the bill on Friday, 17th May.

Before in 2017, Taiwan's constitutional court ruled that gay couples had the right to get married legally, however, it wasn't until Friday the parliament legalized the marriage.

Thousands of LGBTQ supporters gathered outside awaiting the parliament in Taipei, the capital, to hear the landmark ruling. The crowd yelled on joy while some were seen in tears as the law was announced. But, the opponents were in rage by the decision.

Wu Tzu-an, a 33-year-old gay artist, took to his Twitter, mentioning the day was glorious for the country, and the nation took a big step towards true equality. Here is his post:

The parliament was given a two-year deadline to pa s s the bill which was set to 24 May 2019. The law will go into effect from 24 May 2019.
