Sprint car veteran and former World of Outlaws champion, Greg Hodnett was killed Thursday night at a high-speed crash at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pennsylvania.

ESPN reported that Hodnett lost control of his car at Turn 1 of the race and hit a wall at a high-speed. Despite he was fully protected and wearing a helmet, he died on impact. The York County Coroner's office revealed that the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

The coroner also confirmed that the autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. Hodnett's website released a statement saying:

Please keep Sherry, the entire Hodnett family, and the Heffner racing team in your thoughts and prayers.

The statement continued,

Greg was a professional in every sense of the world, and will be desperately missed!

One of Hodnett's close friends, Les Stewart recounted the crash to the Yorkd Daily Record saying:

You knew something was wrong when he didn't get out of the car right away. You knew he was hurt. You didn't know he was gone.

Clair Wintermyer, the owner of the local Wintermyer Auto Salvage called Hodnett as "a real easy-going guy." He further said,

He was friendly with everyone. All the years I saw him race, I've never ever seen him raise his voice. Not once.

According to the statement from ESPN, Hodnett had won 20 World of Outlaws races in his lengthy career. Further, he was a five times champion at Pennsylvania's Williams Grove Speedway.
