Childhood

Shari was born Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz on 17th January, 1933, in The Bronx, New York, United States. She was born to parents, Ann Ritz and Abraham Hurwitz who were both Jewish.

Her father was a professor at Yeshiva University. Shari spent most of her childhood days with her sister. She began learning few tricks from her magician father at the tender age of 13.

Early Career     

Shari was proficient at playing piano, violin, juggling, and ice skating. She even learned ventriloquism from John W. Cooper.

Shari joined New York's High School of Music and Art, and also American School of Ballet, and took acting from Sanford Meisner of the Neighbourhood Playhouse. Shari then went on to attend Barnard College.

Later Career:

Shari was first seen in CBS’s Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts showing off her puppetry and winning the first prize. She then became a host of NBC’s WRCA-TV’s Facts N’Fun.

Shari would do all sorts of entertainment acts like telling stories, singing, craft making, playing games, and more. Soon, Shari began working in WPIX as the host of Kartoon Klub. The name of the show was later changed to Shari & Friends.

Shari began earning a huge salary from her work her own show, The Shari Leis Show, which featured various characters like Hush Puppy, Charlie Horse, Lamb Chop, and Wing Ding.

Shari is also credited for her appearance in ‘Car 54, Where Are You?’, ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’, and more. She went on to host ‘Lamb Chop's Play-Along’, and ‘The Charlie Horse Music Pizza’.

Married and personal life

Shari Lewis was married to Stan Lewis. The couple got divorced. Soon, Shari began dating her boyfriend Jeremy Tarcher who was a publisher and better known as the brother of novelist Judith Krantz. Shari married Jeremy in 1958. Together they gave birth to their daughter Mallory.

Mallory has been continuing her mother's work with the Lamb Chop character. She currently lives in New York, United States. And Mallory is often seen attending several fashion and musical events.

In June 1998, Shari had been diagnosed with uterine cancer. She also previously suffered from breast cancer in 1984.Shari Lewis died on 2nd August 1998 in Los Angeles due to uterine cancer and Pneumonia at the age of 65.
