Eight people died after two young men wearing hoods and masks opened fire at a school in southern Brazil. The men were armed with guns, knives, and crossbows took their own lives after taking eight innocent lives.

The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday at the school in Suzano, a suburb of Sao Paulo after two young men entered the building and opened fire.

Six students and two teachers were killed in the incident whereas several injured were taken to the hospitals, reported Governor Joao Doria. Most of the students were 15 and 16 years old.

A video shared by Globo TV shows students screaming and running as the gunmen started firing haphazardly. The shooters, aged 25, and 17 have been identified as the former pupils of the school who reportedly shot the owner of a car rental agency to death and stole a vehicle.

João Doria, the governor of the Sao Paulo state told the incident was the saddest thing he has ever seen in his lifetime. He further added the school was evacuated. "The school is on lockdown," told the governor.

Even though Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, school shootings are rare. The last major school shooting was in 2011 when 12 children were killed by a former student in Rio de Janeiro.
