Ron Simmons is a retired American professional wrestler and football player. Simmons has wrestled for wrestling promotions like World Championship Wrestling (WCW), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), and the World Wrestling Federation / World Wrestling Entertainment (WWF/WWE).

Ronald Simmons was born in Perry, Georgia on May 15, 1958. He is 62 years old at the time of this writing and is billed at a height of 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters).    

Simmons attended Warner Robins High School in nearby Warner Robins, Georgia, where he began playing football as a tight end. He was a high-profile acquisition by Florida State University and was a consecutive two-time All-American in 1979 and 1980.

Football Career

There was a lot of fanfare surrounding Simmons' signing with the Cleveland Browns during the 1981 NFL Draft, having been an All-American defensive tackle at Florida State.

He played two seasons with the Browns and briefly played for the USFL (the United States Football League) team, Tampa Bay Bandits. After a floundering football career, Simmons became a professional wrestler.

Pro Wrestling Career

Ron Simmons began his professional wrestling career signing with Jim Crockett Promotions in 1986. His most notable turn at the promotion was his tag-team with Butch Reed, Doom

In 1988, Jim Crockett Promotions was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System, thus forming World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Simmons went on to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion in 1992, becoming the first African-American champion in the belt's lineage. 

He left WCW for Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 1994 and spent two years in the promotion before signing with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1996.

He had his most successful and most prolific years in the WWF. He was a s sociated with two successful acts: first, as the leader of The Nation of Domination stable, and later, in the Acolytes/APA tag-team with Bradshaw (JBL).   

He officially retired from wrestling in 2004 and is currently signed to a "Legends" contract with WWE, enjoying benefits for sporadic appearances to utter his catchphrase "DAMN!" 

Simmons was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.
