Standout Basketball Player At Portland State University Shot To Death By His Sister

The rising basketball star at Portland State University, Deante Strickland was fatally shot by his sister. Police reported Strickland, 22, was shot at a Northeast Portland home alongside two other women, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Officers arrested his sister Tamena Strickland, 30, on Saturday morning on charges of one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Damian Strickland, Deante and Tamena's uncle, confirmed his niece shot Deante as well as her aunt and grandmother. Damian told The Oregonian his nephew's last words were "My sister shot me" and "I don't want to die." The outlet further reported a 4-year-old boy was present at the time of shootings. 

Deante played basketball at Portland's Central Catholic High School before starting a collegiate career at Casper College in Wyoming. He later transferred to Portland State University after coach Barret Peery recruited him in 2017.

Talking to Oregon Live, coach Peery told,

We are better for having had Deante in our lives. His smile, pa s sion, and energy for life was second to none. He lit up a room and made the people around him better in every way.

Peery also added,

He loved his family, his friends and everyone around him. He had great pride in being a kid from Portland and it showed in how he competed each day. We will never forget him and he will always be with us.

Strickland had played 65 games at Portland State University through two seasons. He was studying social science at the college.
