Peter William Mayhew aka Peter Mayhew, who is widely known for portraying the character of Chewbacca in all the character’s live-action scenes The Force Awakens in 2015, has died.

The British born actor died at his home in Texas at the age of 74. He was working as a hospital orderly in 1976 when George Lucas tapped him to appear in part. His primary qualification for the profession was his height. He stands 7 feet 3 inches tall.

His height was enough to tower over Darth Vader played by David Prowse who is six foot six inches tall.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Peter went back to his hospital work after portraying Chewie in Star Wars. He later came back to the play again in The Empire Strikes Back and then in Return of the Jedi.

Till the time, his character became famous enough that he could make his living on the convention circuit.

Peter’s family in a memorial statement wrote that he had traveled all over the world for more than thirty years spending time with his fans and friends. It stated:

Peter developed lifelong friendships with the other cast members and his fans while on the convention circuit.

The memorial service for friends and family will be held on June 29 with a memorial for fans and followers in Los Angeles in early December at EmpireCon.

Peter had appeared in dozens of movies and television series like Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Comic Book: The Movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Glee, Dark Towers, The Muppet Show, and many others.

Last year, Peter underwent spinal surgery to improve his mobility. He declared that the operation was a success.
