Palagummi Sainath

Palagummi Sainath is the grandson of V.V Giri (former President of India). He is a journalist and photojournalist who focuses on social & economic inequality, rural affairs, poverty, and the aftermath of globalization in India. He has won more than 40 global and national awards (including Padma Bhushan).

Early Life 

Palagummi Sainath was born in 1957. in Chennai into a Telugu-speaking family; He is Madrasi as ethnicity. He is of Indian nationality.

 Sainath went to Loyola College. He received a degree in history from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. The University of Alberta awarded him a Doctor of Letters (DLitt) honor.

Early Career 

Sainath started his journalist career at the United News of India in 1980. Later on,  he worked for the Blitz then a major Indian weekly tabloid published from Mumbai, first as foreign affairs editor and then as deputy editor.

Since 1988, Sainath has trained well over 1,000 media persons. He served as the Rural Affairs Editor at The Hindu. He resigned in 2014. Moreover, he is the founding editor of the People’s Archive of Rural India.

A most influential voice among the public

Sainath is the most influential voice among the public. As a development journalist; his significant work from the past decade focuses on agriculture, in particular his ground-breaking work on farmer suicides. That is the largest wave of suicides recorded in the history of India.

He was the first reporter in the world who won Amnesty International’s Global Human Rights Journalism in its inaugural year in 2000.

Winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards

Sainath is the winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards in 2007, for Journalism Literature and Creative Communications Arts.  In 2014, World Media Summit Global Award honored him.  He has got more than 40 print media awards and picked up over 20 awards across the globe.

Currently, Sainath is focused on his latest project, the People’s Archive of Rural India launched on Dec 20, 2014.
