Omar Rodríguez-López, the Multi-instrumentalists and his Music

Omar Rodriguez- Lopez was born in Puerto Rico but he grew up in El Paso, Texas and spent his childhood in South Carolina. He is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, writer, actor and also a film director. Rodríguez began playing ba s s when he was just twelve. He later switched to guitar when he was 15. It was that time when he met Cedric Bixler-Zavala, which he kept practicing with friend Paul Hinojos, Since then he has spent most of his career working with his close friend Bixler.

Omar attended Coronado High School in El Paso. Later when he was 17 years old, he got addicted to opiates. He once again got in touch with friend Cedric Bixler-Zavala. In his suggestion, he came back to El Paso, where he could begin to reclaim his life from addiction and join At the Drive-In as a backup vocalist and ba s s guitarist. His instrument style is characterized by riffs, melodies based on minor chords, changing meters, unresolved dissonances. He is also known for his vast array of effect pedals.

He has also been a filmmaker through his works in movies. He was known best as a composer and director of the Sentimental Engine, Slayer(2010). He has also worked as a solo artist with many renowned works in his account. He has usually been labeled with The Drive-In and The Mars Volta where he worked as a guitarist and a bandleader.He is currently the guitarist for the alternative rock groups Antemasque and Bosnian Rainbows.

Rodríguezis also the former ba s sist and guitarist for the dub reggae band De Facto. He has said to have dated Ximena Sarinana first, and Danielle Van Ark from 2006-2007.
