  • She is held on $250k bond.
  • She might face 15 years in prison for each count of rape charges and up to 10 years for sexual battery.

A former Oklahoma high school teacher is charged with two counts of rapes and a sexual battery after she had sex with three of her students.

The teacher has been identified as Janet Kay Barnes, 44, who taught at Povola High School, located in a rural area near Arkansas border.

Police began investigating Barnes in late 2016 after they were tipped alleging the teacher was involved in inappropriate conduct with many of her students. The district superintendent said she was suspended from the school during the investigation.

According to the grand jury indictment obtained by WTKR, Barnes had physical relation with two minors in separate incidents between January 2014 and November 2016.

She is also indicted on sexual battery against a third student, who was an adult, in a separate incident. The charge was due to the law of Oklahoma that forbids the teachers from having sex with their students even if they are over the age of consent.

She was arrested on Friday, 17th May after the jury in Leflore County issued an arrest warrant against the former teacher. She remains in police custody with a $250k bond. She may face up to 15 years in jail on two counts of second-degree rapes while the sexual battery charge is punishable up to 10 years in prison.
