NYPD Deputy Chief Shoots Himself To Death Inside A Patrol Car

A New York Police Department deputy chief died Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, NYPD confirmed.

A police spokesman told Fox News that Deputy Chief Steven Silks, 62, died after he shot himself. Police Sergeant Lee Jones said Silks had been with the police department for over 38 years.

The NYPD in Queens took to its Twitter paying tribute to the late officer where they wrote: "Deputy Chief Steven Silks of PBQN was honored and awarded tonight for his 39 years of dedicated service."

A different source told New York Post that the officer, who was a month away from his retirement was sitting in an unmarked patrol car when he shot in his head, however, police hasn't confirmed the information.

Fox News reported at least 159 officers committed suicide, which is 9% more than the total number of officers killed in the line of duty.

More specifically, New York had one of the highest rates of suicides among the major US cities where 10 officers were reported dead by suicide as of January 2019.
