Born 12 August 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, Goldman began his career in writing. According to his memoir, Adventures in the Screen Trade (1983), Goldman started writing after he took a creative writing training course in his college days.

He made his debut in the movie with his screenplay for the Paul Newman 1966 movie Harper. His first original screenplay was Butch Ca s sidy and the Sundance Kid which he sold for $400,000, became the highest paid original screenplay ever. The movie was released in 1969 which gave him his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Goldman later earned his second Academy Award for his Watergate-scandal movie All the President's Men. Although his work in The Princess Bride couldn't give him any accolades, it is considered as one of his finest works.

Talking about the origin of the story with EW in 2011, he told the story was inspired from his two daughters; Jenny and Susanna. He reminisced,

I had two little daughters, I think they were 7 and 4 at the time, and I said, 'I'll write you a story. What do you want it to be about?' One of them said 'a princess' and the other one said 'a bride.' I said, 'That'll be the title.'

Goldman's other notable film credits include A Bridge Too Far and The Stepford Wives and Misery.

The late screenwriter is survived by his two daughters Jenny Rebecca and Susanna. He was married to Ilene Jones from 1961 to 1991. The funeral arrangements will be announced in the upcoming days.

Rest In Peace Goldman!
