Police Officer Killed During A Routine Traffic Stop In North Carolina

A North Carolina police officer was shot to death during a routine traffic stop in Mooresville, North Carolina late Saturday, 4th May. Police confirmed the suspect later killed himself.

Damon Williams, Mooresville Police Chief told at a press conference that the K-9 Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon, 32, was taken to a hospital after the culprit shot him, however, died shortly after reaching the hospital from the injuries.

Williams further told the suspect, identified as Michael Aldana, 28, fled the scene and was found later in an apartment near the crime scene. Until police entered the apartment, the suspect had already died from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Aldana, who was familiar to the Mooresville police had no previous criminal records. Williams didn't reveal why Sheldon stopped Aldana Saturday night but said the investigators have been reviewing Sheldon's body camera that he wore at the time of the shooting.

Ramone, Sheldon's police dog, was also with him at the time of the shooting. Sheldon had been serving the police department for six years.

Chief Williams told of Sheldon's family that "they're our family" and they wanted to take care of them.
