'Game of Thrones' Actor Max von Sydow Dies at Age 90

Max von Sydow, a Swedish actor best known for his appearances in Game of Thrones and The Exorcist, has died. He was 90.

His agent Jean Diamond confirmed his death in a statement to Associated Press on Monday, March 9. Diamond said that Sydow pa s sed away in France on Sunday, March 8.

He told the Associated Press,

It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born as Carl Adolf von Sydow in Sweden in April 1929, Max Von Sydow had changed his name after World War II.

He started his acting career at the age of 20, with a role in the 1949 Swedish film, Only a Mother. He had since appeared in nearly 200 projects.

He made his Hollywood debut in 1965 with the role of Jesus Christ in the historical drama film, The Greatest Story Ever Told. Later in 1973, he played a notable role as Father Lankester Merrin in the thriller mystery film,The Exorcist.

He was nominated for the Oscars Award two times during his seven-decade career: one for Pelle the Conqueror in 1989 and for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close in 2012.

He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the Three-Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones.

Max was married to a Swedish actress, Christina Olin, from 1951 to 1979. The two had two sons, Clas and Henrik, together. He later got married to French filmmaker Catherine von Sydow (née Brelet) in 1997. They shared two sons, Yvan and Cedric.
