Massive Wildfires Killed At Least 11 And Left Over 100 Injured In Northern California

Ma s sive wildfires swept through northern parts of California- killed at least 11 people and left more than 100 people injured on Monday. The fires burned in the wine country of Napa and Sonoma counties has caused over 1500 residences and building destruction.

Authorities have said, hundreds of firefighters were battling 17 different fires across multiple countries around the state on Monday night. The fire intensified by the strong winds charred at around 90,000 acres of land; forcing nearly 20,000 residents to evacuate.

The California Fire Director Ken Pimlott later said at a press conference that the fire ignited Sunday night and Monday and spread swiftly due to the dry conditions.

Jesus Torres, a resident of Napa, said,

We gathered up a few of our things and our pets and headed out to our car. We could see the sky was turning red. …We didn’t know until the last second. There was smoke all over the area.

Governor Jerry Brown wrote five-page-long letters to President Donald Trump Monday afternoon in the hope of federal emergency aid. Brown wrote,

we have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capabilities of the state and affected local governments and supplemental federal a s sistance is necessary.

The National Weather Service has warned that very low relative humidity would continue to pose a critical threat through Tuesday morning. They also mentioned winds were expected to weaken later in the day and on Wednesday.
