New York man, who killed his ex-wife's partner in the presence of his four young children has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday, 25th September.

37-year-old Alwasi Tyson stabbed Toni Alea Cox, 22, in May 2016 after he found her in bed with his ex-wife inside an apartment on Clarkson Ave. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn. Tyson's children aged 16, 13, 12, and 11 witnessed him kicking Cox and stabbing in her chest.

Cox's family members and several grief-stricken friends attended the Tuesday's court session in the 19th-floor courtroom in Brooklyn Supreme Court. The family members and friends couldn't control their emotions as a handcuffed Tyson, who was sitting with a stoic expression facing the judge, as sentenced.

"I hope that she is the first thing you see when you wake up, and the last thing you see when you go to sleep," Cox's older sister, Ebony, 34, read in her victim impact statement. She continued,

I hope that you never get a good night's rest.

Cox's father, Derrick Moore called Tyson a "coward" in court and said,

I am so disturbed by this. Not a day that goes by I don't think about my baby girl. I hate you, man. I hate for that.

Tyson admitted to stabbing the girl, given 20 years in prison and five years post-release supervision as part of a plea deal with Brooklyn prosecutors. Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn District Attorney said in a statement,

This defendant attacked and stabbed to death an innocent and helpless young woman who had her whole life ahead of her. He also left his children to live with the traumatic memory of his actions. I hope that the victim’s family finds some small solace with his conviction and today’s lengthy prison term.

After Tyson's confession, Justice Laura Johnson said

To Ms. Cox’s family: I am so sorry for your loss. It is, as I said, evident how much she was loved — just in the sheer number of you that turned out for the sentencing

"Mr. Tyson ... I do hope you spend a lot of time thinking about what happened and thinking about Ms. Cox.," Johnson told Tyson.
