Los Angeles Agrees To Host The Upcoming 2028 Olympic Games

by Arya Pokhrel,

Los Angeles officials announced an agreement on Monday with International Olympic leaders that to open the way for the city to host the 2028 Summer Games, leaving Paris to stage the 2024 edition.

The agreement would make LA a three-time Olympic city, after hosting the 1932 and 1984 Games.

After the news of the deal came out, Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement, “The city is taking a major step toward bringing the Games back to our city for the first time in a generation. This is a historic day for Los Angeles, for the United States.”

The agreement follows a vote in June from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to name hosts for successive Games - with just Paris and Los Angeles bidding - but it was unclear which would host in which year.

Both the cities had wanted to host the 2024 event.

The IOC welcomed Los Angeles' move, promising to contribute $1.8bn (£1.4bn) to the organizing committee. IOC is also expected to formally announce the hosts for the Games at a meeting in Lima, Peru, on Sept. 13.
