At least 20 people were killed and 50 over wounded in a suicide bomb explosion at Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's running mate, Amrullah Saleh's office.
Amrullah Saleh was slightly injured in the attack that occurred during the rush hour on Sunday evening. Three militants, who trespa s sed Saleh's four-story office after the explosion, were killed by the Afghan forces.
Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said that the forces involved in six hours long gun exchange with the militants during which more than 150 civilians were rescued.
The attack occurred hours after Ghani and Saleh, along with other politicians, launched their two-month-long election campaign.
The victims included four members of the security forces and 16 civilians. Further, 43 civilians and seven security personnel were taken to the hospital with minor to severe injuries.
No militant groups have claimed responsibility for the attack. However, both the Taliban and Islamic State group have been active in the Afghan Capital and have carried out several attacks in the past.
The presidential election is scheduled to take place on September 28. President Ghani is seeking a second term as the president.
