Garbine Muguruza Defeats Venus Williams To Win First Wimbledon Title

Garbine Muguruza would not let the Williams sisters defeat her on Saturday’s match in Wimbledon final. Not this time.

Two years after losing the finals to Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza broke through for her first Wimbledon title with a powerful one-sided win over her sister Venus Williams.

The Spaniard claimed two set points by Venus Williams to rally and won the first set with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over the 37-year-old five-time champion, who was bidding to become the oldest woman in the Open era to win a Grand Slam title.

 

 I had the hardest match today against Venus. She's such an incredible player and I grew up watching her play...sorry.

It was Muguruza’s second Grand Slam title to add to her 2016 French Open victory. She was irresistible at this tournament, dropping her serve only four times on the way to the final. Yet there were times in the early stages when it seemed like she might be overwhelmed.

It was a very sensational match from both the players. Even if the result of the match was equally disappointing for some fans as Williams could’ve created a sporting fairytale by lifting the sixth Wimbledon, Muguruza’s win was definitely a positive result for the sport.
