Former Miami Dolphins Linebacker Nick Buoniconti Dies At 78

Legendary NFL player and Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti has died. He was 78. His team confirmed his death on Wednesday morning, 31st July in a series of social media tributes.

Buoniconti's family spokesperson, Bruce Bobbins announced he died Tuesday in Bridgehampton, New York. Cause of his death is not announced yet.

Hall of Fame president and CEO David Baker released a statement saying: 

Nick Buoniconti was a true hero of the game. His inspiring Hall of Fame journey that started as a 13th round draft choice to leading the Dolphins 'No Name' defense is one filled with grit, determination, courage, and compa s sion.

The statement added,

Nick's contributions off the field were even greater than what he did on it. He lived a life of honor and nobility and his legacy will live forever through his Bronzed Bust in Canton, Ohio.

Buoniconti was the fixture on Miami Dolphins that won back-to-back Super Bowls, including the only franchise that finished with an unblemished 17-0  record.

The Boston Patriots picked him in the 13th round of the 1962 American Football League draft. He played productive football for 14 years during which he was selected for all-pro selection five times and Pro Bowler for eight times.

After his retirement, he and his son, Marc, worked tirelessly in pursuit of a cure for paralysis that he suffered in 1985 when he made a tackle for the Citadel. The father and son raised over a half-billion dollars.

Later, they helped to found the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the world's largest spinal cord injury research center.

Late Buoniconti is survived by his wife, Lynn, sons Marc, Nick Jr., and Justin, and a daughter Gina.
