Former Florida Resource Officer Scot Peterson Arrested For His Negligency During Parkland Highschool Shooting

Former Florida school resource officer Scot Peterson has been arrested over his failure to confront the shooters during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting which killed 17 people.

Peterson was waiting outside the institution while the shooter, a former student, 19 stormed at the students and the school staff. After the incident, Mr. Peterson was hugely criticized and more than a year after, he faces the child neglect, culpable negligence, and perjury charges.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony announced Peterson's termination in a statement released on Tuesday that read:

We cannot fulfill our commitment to always protect the security and safety of our Broward County community without doing a thorough a s sessment of what went wrong that day.

The statement further read:

I am committed to addressing deficiencies and improving the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Peterson is booked into the Broward County Jail on $102k bail. After Peterson's arrest on Tuesday, his attorney, Joseph A. DiRuzzo III said,

the charges appear to be a thinly veiled attempt of politically motivated retribution against Mr. Peterson.

DiRuzzo further said Peterson couldn't be indicted as a caregiver as he was acting as a law enforcement officer in an official capacity.

The prosecutor said Peterson faces a maximum of 96 and a half years in prison if convicted off all 11 charges. Lori Alhadeff, the mother of Alyssa Alhadeff, who was one of the victims of the Parkland shooting, said she was happy to hear about the arrest of Peterson.
