Former FIFA Player Of The Year And Liberian President George Weah Plays For Liberia At 51

Liberian president George Weah, the first African player to win FIFA player of the year award, has played for Liberia once again. In a recent friendly match against Nigeria, Weah got into the field.

Weah started the Tuesday's match against Nigeria and played for 79 minutes; unfortunately, Liberia lost the match to Nigeria by 2-1. The game was arranged to retire the 14 number jersey, worn by Weah at his playing peak.

The former AC Milan player, who retired from international football in 2003, received a standing ovation while he was substituted at the 80th minute of the match.

Weah, who will turn 52 next month, led the Liberian national team around 16 years after his last appearance. Two early goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo gave Nigeria a 2-0 lead before the host tried to pull the match back with a Kpah Sherman's late penalty.

Nigeria fielded a strong team last night including Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi and Stoke City's midfielder Peter Etebo.

Weah won the presidential election in December 2017, beating vice-president, Joseph Boakai with 61.5% of the total vote. He a s sumed his office from 22nd January 2018.
