Bobby Joe Long, the serial killer who shook the Tampa Bay area with terror in 1984, is set for execution. Long, who is responsible for at least 10 women's murder is to receive a lethal injection Thursday, 24th May at Florida State Prison in Starke.
Cindy Brown, Long's ex-wife, said he is getting what he deserves. She said,
This is something that in my heart should have happened many, many years ago. It's been a long time coming. I hate to see anybody die, but he's done the thing that he's done. You made your bed; it's time to lay in it.
Brown and Long divorced in 1980, over three decades ago, however, she still vividly remembers what he did to her before their divorce. She said that one day Long choked her and slammed her head into a television, knocking her unconscious with a deep cut to the forehead. She recalled,
When I came to, I was on the couch. Of course, he was there, crying. 'I'll never do it again. I'm so sorry.
She further said Long threatened her with death if she would reveal what he did to her while getting stitches.
After their divorce, Long turned more violent, and he went on committing several heinous crimes that included dozens of rapes. His acts earned him 28 life sentence and the death penalty for one of the killings; of 22-year-old Michelle Simms. In March 1984, Long killed his first victim, Artiss Ann Wick which was followed by nine more victims within the next eight months when he was finally arrested.
One of his rape victims, a 17-year-old girl, survived his attack, and she led police to Long. The girl said she had been heading to her home in a bicycle from her work at a doughnut shop when Long snatched her off the bike and raped her in his car.
