As a spokesperson and communications director for the Democratic National Committee, she guided the re-branding the party, the successful 2006 congressional elections, and party's strategies for 2008 presidential election. 

In April 2013, MSNBC announced that she would host a weekend news program called ' Disrupt with Karen Finney'. However, the show was canceled on June 5, 2014. On November 25, 2014, she joined as a senior fellow and consultant for Media Matters.
