Harty Condolence! Clive Cussler, the popular US author best known for his Dirk Pitt novels, has died. He was 88.

He died on Monday, February 24, at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. A spokeswoman for publisher Penguin Random House, Alexis Welby, confirmed the death of the writer.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

His wife, Janet Horvath, also shared a tweet on the pa s sing of her husband. She wrote,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news that my husband Clive pa s sed away [on] Monday. "It has been a privilege to share in his life. I want to thank you, his fans and friends, for all the support. He was the kindest most gentle man I ever met. I know, his adventures will continue.

Cussler wrote 25 books including Sahara and Raise the Titanic. More than 100 million copies of his novels have been sold in total.

His book, Sahara, turned into the 2005 blockbuster movie of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey. The film had a box office collection of $119.2 million worldwide.
