Actress Claudette Nevins Dies at Age 82

Claudette Nevins, an American actress best known for starring in the original production of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite on Broadway and The Great White Hope in a national tour, has died. She was 82.

Her family announced her death revealing that Nevins pa s sed away on February 20 in hospice care at her Los Angeles home. The cause of her death of the veteran actress has not been disclosed yet.

The family wrote in her obituary,

She was a voracious reader, loved attending the theater, movies, art exhibits and generally taking in all life had to offer. Competent in everything she touched, Claudette was funny, strong-willed, awesomely disciplined, relentless in her pursuit of excellence. A staunch feminist, she also actively supported several philanthropies and kept herself and those around her on their toes about their civic and personal responsibilities to the world. Starting from very humble origins, Claudette grew herself into an elegant, articulate, gorgeous woman who was universally admired. She was dazzling. She will be endlessly missed.

Born on April 10, 1937, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Nevins is also known for her appearance in 10 episodes of Fox long-running soap opera Melrose Place, a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210.

She was the daughter of a fur salesman, Claudette Weintraub. Nevins had studied at the High School of Performing Arts in New York. She had then attended New York University from where she graduated in 1957.

She had also notably appeared as the mother of Special Agent Clayton Webb (played by Steven Culp) on JAG, and as Andy Griffith's wife on the CBS show Headmaster.
