Cardinal Bernard Francis Law Dies Aged 86 In Rome

The former Boston archbishop Bernard Law, who resigned following the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, has died at 86 on 20 December 2017 in Rome, multiple sources confirmed.

Law died early Wednesday morning in Rome after battling a long illness, the Vatican said. Law had moved to Italy in 2002 and had been served as archpriest in the Papal Liberian Basilica of St. Mary Major after resigning as the archbishop of Boston.

The Vatican didn't reveal the cause of his death, however, sources close to Law said he had been battling complications of diabetes, liver failure, and a pericardial effusion (build up of fluids around the heart).

The Boston Globe investigation revealed Law and other bishops involved in the children abuse in 2002. After the revelation, Law apologized to the victims of priest John Geoghan. John was convicted in 2002 of indecent a s sault and battery on a 10-year boy.

Law will get a full cardinal's funeral on Thursday afternoon at the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica. Pope Francis will give a 'final commendation,' as he has for Cardinals' funerals previously.
