Brazilian composer and musician Joao Gilberto has died at the age of 88 at his Rio de Janeiro home on Saturday, 6th July.

His relatives confirmed the news of his death. The family members are yet to disclose the exact cause of his death, but his son, Marcelo Gilberto, on his Facebook reported that his father’s fight was noble and had tried to maintain dignity.

Likewise, his daughter-in-law claimed that Joao wanted to be with the family and wanted to play with his granddaughter.

Joao Gilberto AKA Joao Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, who was born on 10th June 1931, in Juazeiro, State of Bahia, Brazil, started his singing career at the age of 18. He moved to Rio where he released the record Chega de Saudade in the year 1959 which marked the starting of the world famous bossa nova music style.

It was his 1964 album Getz/Gilberto with Stan Getz which popularized him in the musical genre around the world. The album was sold millions of copies and has won several Grammy awards.

Over his career, Joao had won two Grammy awards and nominated for six.

Joao had spent his final days being wrapped in debts, legal troubles, and disputes with his children. He performed his last live performance in 2008. He canceled the commemorative show to mark his 80th year due to his health problems.
