Barbara "B." Smith, a lifestyle guru and restaurateur who previously worked as a model, died on February 22, at her home in Long Island. She was 70.
Her family confirmed the tragic news by sharing a statement. Her husband, Dan Gasby, wrote in a Facebook post,
It is with great sadness that my daughter Dana and I announce the pa s sing of my wife, Barbara Elaine Smith.
He added,
Thank you to all the friends and fans who supported B. and our family during her journey. Thank you to everyone for respecting our privacy during this agonizing time. Heaven is shining even brighter now that it is graced with B.’s dazzling and unforgettable smile.
As for the cause of death, the businesswoman pa s sed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease with which she was diagnosed in 2013.
Smith was the founder of three restaurants and had published three cookbooks. They had even launched a television show, which was a nationally syndicated, and a magazine.
In 1976, Smith became the second black model to being featured on Mademoiselle magazine's cover, after Joli Jones in 1969.
Smith is survived by her husband Gasby, who she married in 1992, and a stepdaughter Dana Gasby.
