Synopsis

Anthony Rapp is an American Stage & film actor as well as singer, best known for introducing the role of Mark Cohen in the Broadway composition of Rent in 1996 and also continuing the role in the film version and the Broadway Tour of Rent in 2009.

Early life and education

Anthony Rapp was born as Anthony Deane Rapp on October 26, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He belongs to white ethnicity and holds an American nationality.

Rapp is the son of Douglas Rapp and Mary Lee Rapp who was a trained nurse. His parents divorced, and Rapp was raised by his mother. He has German, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry.

Rapp grew up with his older brother, Adam Rapp who is an American novelist, playwright, screenwriter, musician as well as film director.

Rapp attended high school at the Joliet West High School where he won the numerous awards for his singing.  Later, he joined Interlochen Arts Camp, an exclusive arts camp, and studied acting for two years.

 He continues to teach master cla s ses there, and at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Career

Anthony Rapp began his career at the age of six and received his first professional job at the age of nine. As a child actor Rapp appeared in All My Children (1970) along with Louis Edmonds in Regional Theater.

Rapp first acted on the Broadway in 1981 at musical The Little Prince, and the Aviator, a musical based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel The Little Prince, Unfortunately, the show was stopped during previews.

Rapp also performed in 1987 American comedy film, Adventures in Babysitting, which was directed by Chris Columbus which would later direct Rapp in the film version of Rent.

Rapp has appeared in several movies, and Broadway shows such as A Beautiful Mind, School Ties, Road Trip, Dazed and Confused, An American Family, Danny Roane: First Time Director & You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and more.

In the year 2000, Rapp released a solo CD, entitled Look Around. He also appeared in the television episode Psych: The Musical, which debuted on USA Network on December 15, 2013.

Personal life

In 2012, the periodical, Metro Weekly, referred Rapp as one of the first openly gay men on Broadway. During the 1997 interview with Oasis Magazine, the actor explained his sexual identity as "queer" rather than gay. He said

I don't want to get into labels, but I've never labeled myself except to say I'm queer. The things that's been most important to me to be out about is that I have been in loving relationships with men...I haven't said 'I am gay.' Because the truth is that I've also been in love with women, although the truth is I do think I'm primarily h 0sexual...
