American Couple On A Vacation In The Dominican Republic Found Dead In A Hotel Room

An engaged couple from Maryland, who had been a vacation in the Dominican Republic were found dead inside their hotel room. The couple was discovered dead on Thursday, 30th May at the Playa Nueva Romana resort.

In the statement released by the resort, the couple was identified as Edward Nathaniel Holmes and Cynthia Ann Day. The hotel statement further read:

We are deeply saddened by the incident at one of our hotels in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and want to express our deepest condolences to their family and friends.

The pair had been staying in the hotel since May 25.

The U.S. Department of State said it was working with the local officials on the investigation.

The hotel staff went to their room after they missed their scheduled check out on Thursday where they were found unresponsive. The statement revealed there was no sign of physical violence.

The Dominican Republic National Police reported the autopsies revealed the couple had respiratory failure and pulmonary edema.

CNN reported investigators found medication for high blood pressure in their hotel room. Holmes' grief-stricken daughter Dajuan Holmes-Hamilton told local NBC affiliate "it should have never happened."
