Alexander Frei was born in Basel, Switzerland, on 15 July 1979. He has a sister named Andrea Frei who plays football for the Basel ladies team. He opened the doors for his footballing career joining the youth set-up FC Begnins at the tender age of 8 and played for a year.
Feri later went on to join FC Aesch and played until 1995 before his transfer to FC Basel.

Alexander Frei began his professional football career playing for his hometown club FC Basel. He later played for the French club Rennes and quickly showed his potential and gained a lot of popularity becoming the highest goalscorer during the 2004-5 season in Ligue 1.
For his settler performance on the pitch, Frei became the Swiss Footballer of the Year twice in 2004 and 2007. On 29 June 2006, the player joined the club Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract for a transfer fee of around €5 million ($5,842,110) and delivered his greatest performance scoring 16 goals in 32 matches which led him to become the highest goal scorer for Borussia Dortmund.
Frei rejoined his former club FC Basel and scored the last minute winning goal in a 2-1 victory against FC Sion. He was named the Swiss League Top goalscorer after he netted 27 goals in just 35 league matches throughout the 2010-11 season. With the club, he also won the League Championship title as well as Swiss Cup at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Frei also received his fourth championship medal and a Swiss cup silver medal, at the end of the Swiss League season 2012-13.

Alexander Frei gained huge attention after scoring 9-goals in 19 matches for Switzerland Under-21 team in 1999. On 24 March 2001, he made his full international debut for his nation during the World Cup qualification Group 1 match against the Republic of Yugoslavia which ended in the 1-1 draw.
Frei scored his first hattrick for Switzerland in the 5–0 home win against Luxembourg. The striker decided to retire from the national team On 5 April 2011.
Following his retirement, Frei started his managerial career working with FC Luzern on 19 March 2013.
