Airstrike in Libya; Attack Kills At Least 44 At Detention Centre
An Airstrike That Hit A Migrant Center East Of The Libyan Capital Of Tripoli Has Killed At Least 44 People And Another 130 Injured.
The Health Ministry’s emergency service Field Medicine and Support Center reported that an airstrike which hit at a migrant center east of the Libyan capital of Tripoli had killed at least 44 people. Another 130 people have been injured.
Most of the dead are reported to be Africans who were attempting to reach Europe crossing from Libya. Now, thousands of migrants have stopped and held in government-run detention centers.
The anti-government forces led by warlord Gen Khalifa Aftar have accused the government forces on bombarding it.
It is reported that around 120 migrants were at the Tajoura Detention Centre when the direct hit took on Tuesday evening. The Tajoura is said to be the house of 600 migrants.
A member of the UN-backed political dialogue group, Guma El-Gamaty, reported that women and children were among the hit.
Doctor Khalid Bin Attia, an official in the Libyan health ministry, described the incident is psychological trauma. He said:
We couldn't see the area very clear but just when the ambulance came, it was horrible, blood is everywhere, somebody's guts in pieces.
On Monday, it was announced that it would start heavy air strikes on targets in Tripoli after the traditional means of the war had been exhausted.
The country is torn by violence and division since longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was killed in 2011.
