At least 21 are confirmed dead, and 30 more are injured after a tour bus collided with a semi-trailer and caught fire in the Mexican state of Veracruz on Wednesday.

The bus was traveling from Mexico to Tuxtla Gutierrez, located in the southern state of Chiapas.

The civil defense director for Nogales township, Roberto Hernandez said the bus turned onto one side, and the ground blocked the exit doors trapping the pa s sengers inside the bus.

Earlier, 20 people were reported dead, however, officials reported one injured died later in hospital. Authorities said both the vehicles caught fire after they collided in the mountainous area, Cumbres de Maltrata.

According to Getty, the bus was carrying religious pilgrims back from a pilgrimage to a Catholic shrine.

Back in 2006, 65 people died in the same region after a bus carrying pilgrims swerved off the highway and tumbled down a steep ravine.
