Actor Peter Donat, famous for his role as Fox Mulder's father on The X-Files died Monday, 10th September at his home in Point Reyes, California. He was 90 years.

His wife Maria Donat announced to the New York Times her husband died due to the complications of diabetes. Donat was also a frequent stage actor, best known for playing Cyrano de Bergerac Prospero, King Lear, Shylock, and Hadrian VII over course of years.

Mr. Donat preferred theatrical work to films. Talking about his stage acting, Donat said with The Honolulu Advertiser in 1984 that the theatrical act is the closest thing to the ideal creative life. He said,

It’s the closest thing to the ideal creative life.

He further said,

I mean, how often can an actor do Shakespeare, Chekhov and a new play, all in an eight-month span? And do TV shows and films in between?

Along with his wife, Maria DeJong Donat, Mr. Bonat is survived by his sons, Caleb, Lucas, and Christopher, stepdaughters, Barbara Park Shapiro, and Marina Park Sutton; stepson Malcolm Park, and 11 grandchildren.

Donat had been married to his wife Maria since 1983. Previously he was married to actress Michael Learned for over one and a half decade. He tied the knot with Learned and divorced in 1972.
