Desmond is a noted former NFL player who was ranked the ninth Greatest Return Specialist in NFL History NFL Network’s NFL Top 10 Return Aces. Howard has led his team to the Super Bowl as well thus he was voted the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXI and is also the first and only special team’s player to win the award. Desmond Howard was inducted into the 2011 Class of the College Football Hall of Fame due to his amazing abilities. Born on May 15 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio, Desmond Kevin Howard was excellent in the sports arena. Desmond, during his senior year at St. Joseph High School earned All-American and All-Ohio honors as a tailback scoring 18 touchdowns with a record-breaking 5392 rushing yards, as well as 10 interceptions of defense. Ultimately, Desmond earned three varsity letters each in track and football, as well as one in basketball. Later while in University of Michigan, Desmond played football from1989-1991. His University wins were memorable. Desmond set or tied five NCAA and 12 Michigan records. Then he led the Big Ten Conference in scoring with 138 points during the 1991 season and won the Heisman Trophy , Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award, earned first-team All American and All Ohio Honors. In his professional career, Desmond played in the National Football League for the Washington Redskin from 1992 to 1994 and for a year he also played for Jacksonville Jaguars. But Desmond’s most notable professional season was with the Green Bay Packers in 1996. Desmond set straight a NFL record with his 875 punt return yards. Due to this the Green Bay Packers reached Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots. Desmond alone totaled a Super Bowl record of 90 punt return yards and 154 kickoff return yards with one touchdown which was his 244 all-purpose yards which also tied a Super Bowl record. His phenomenal performance was much appreciated and as a result, Desmond earned a Super Bowl MVP award, making him the only player to ever win the award based solely on a special team performance. Desmond played for the Green Bay Packers till 1999 after which he went to play for the Detroit Lions till 2002.In 2000 Desmond led his team to the Pro Bowl as the NFC's kick returner and also the All-Pro. Howard played extremely well in his 11 NFL seasons. Desmond caught 123 passes for 1597 yards, rushed for 68 yards, returned 244 punts for 2895 yards and gained 7295 yards returning 359 kickoffs. Howard also scored 15 touchdowns which included 7 receiving and 8 punt returns. Desmond overall gained 12155 all-purpose yards. Later in July 16 2011, Howard was inducted into the 2011 Class of the College Football Hall of Fame.
